Maze Escape: Slot Overview

One area where Fantasma consistently excel it’s in crafting a rich atmosphere to host their games. Maze Escape Megaways is no exception with a dreamy background made up of mountains and ruins, while a classically inspired soundtrack weaves between them. The action takes place on a 6-reel, 7-row grid, sitting in the middle of the whole scene. To be honest, the view isn’t quite so stunning on a mobile since the grid takes up most of the view. Interestingly, there is no official mention of the number of ways to win, though up to 117,649 would be a safe assumption when you do some simple calculations.

Maze Escape Megaways is based on the story of King Minos of Ancient Crete. After turning his back on the gods, a half-man, half-bull beast was imprisoned in his legendary maze. The maze was built by Daedalus and his son Icarus, the chap who flew too close to the sun. Choosing such well know story gives Fantasma the opportunity to fill Maze Escape with divinities, heroes, and mythical beasts

Escaping from Minos’ Labyrinth is no easy task, which Fantasma has paired with volatility much higher than their two previous Megaways slots. The high volatility works well when you’re on an Avalanche roll, which Maze Escape has the potential to match. It means rewards are there for persistent (or lucky rather) players, but it can be hard going, and not as casual-friendly as previous offerings. RTP is rock solid on 96.15%, while bets from 40 p/c to £/€80 can be selected on any device.

Wins occur in Maze Escape Megaways when three or more matching symbols land left to right from the first reel. There isn’t always a typical reaction feature as such, yet when wins line up in certain positions in the base or in the bonus game, a Shifting Maze Avalanche feature is activated- covered below. Pay symbols, meanwhile, are split into three groups of three symbols. First are low pay Greek letters, lambda, theta, and omega, followed by axes, wreaths, and helms as the mids. Finally, the high pays consist of three character symbols worth 2 to 3 times the stake for six of a kind.

Maze Escape: Slot Features
In the Maze Escape Megaways slot, the gameplay is very unusual and certainly takes a bit of getting used to. That starts with the unorthodox game engine and continues with the other modifiers that can trigger off the back of them. There’s also a free games bonus with more potential modifiers.

Shifting Maze Avalanche feature

In the middle position on the leftmost reel, you’ll see that 1 position is highlighted. If the symbol that appears in this position makes up part of a winning combination, it becomes the Path symbol and the Shifting Maze Avalanche feature is activated.

All Blocker and Minotaur symbols are locked, the matching Path symbols are moved to the central position on their reel and the remaining symbols are removed. All the reels then shift 1 position to the left. The symbols on reel 1 dropping off the screen and new symbols and blockers appearing in reel 6.

On each shift, 2 random blockers are removed. A new payout calculation is then made. If a new winner is formed, the process is repeated. These continue until there’s an avalanche with no new winning combination on display. You can trigger a couple of modifiers during this feature too. To activate them, open the Athena or Minotaur blockers.

Guidance of Athena feature

When Guidance of Athena feature triggers randomly, between 1 and 4 Path symbols are added to empty positions on the grid, boosting your chances of creating a new winning combination.

Minotaur Wild feature

When the Minotaur is unblocked, the Minotaur Wild feature is activated. The Minotaur fills the whole of that reel, turning it wild in the process. This stacked symbol also comes with a multiplier attached which can be anything up to 7x. Like other unblocked symbols, it shifts 1 reel to the left with each Avalanche during the round.

If you’re lucky enough to land more than 1, Minotaur wild in the same winning combination, the multiplier values are combined to give an even bigger payout boost.

Labyrinth Free Spins feature

Land 3 Bonus symbols on the same spin and you can look forward to 10 free spins in the Labyrinth Free Spins feature. Here, the Shifting Maze Avalanche triggers following every winning free spin, not just on those winners that include the highlighted symbol position.

Blocker symbols can appear on reels 3 through 6 during the free spins. When these are unblocked, they can add another 1, 2 or 3 free spins to your total or they can award a 1x, 2x or 3x multiplier boost.

Maze Escape: Slot Verdict

Once again, Fantasma Games has taken Megaways and done something unexpected with it. Maze Escape isn’t your typical Megaways game, nor does it even look like one. In fact, there’s a grid slot vibe going on, which might come across as a little fiddly, maybe even slow at times for those who just want to smash the spin button and get on with it. There’s a layer of intricacy; some might say complication that may put some players off. Others looking for a new twist on Megaways, or a new type of gaming experience in general, however, should be entertained by what Maze Escape can do. At the least, it’s well worth a look if you’re curious.

Maze Escape is certainly different, no questions there. As to merits, it looks great (on a big screen), oozes mythology, and the features are interesting too. Long runs of consecutive combos are possible during the Shifting Maze Avalanche feature, which again feels grid slot-ish at times the way wins run on, triggering modifiers when the right blocker tile is destroyed. They can add up too from a financial perspective. Fantasma claim potential in the region of 25,000 times the stake, easily making Maze Escape the highest paying Megaways slot from the studio so far.

If anything, Maze Escape Megaways solidifies Fantasma’s reputation for doing things their way. The studio could have easily rammed a bull and some gods onto a Blueprint looking Megaways slot, then called it a day. Whether the gameplay ultimately matches your style, it’s hard not to respect Fantasma’s willingness to be all experimental.
