Wild Worlds (NetEnt): Review

Wild Worlds is a 5x5 cluster slot powered by Swedish provider NetEnt with heavy focus on the entertainment aspect of slotting. Playable across all devices from between 0.20 to 400 Eur a spin and inspired by superhero comic books, this brightly coloured offering makes use of an Avalanche feature where winning combinations of at least 3 matching symbols in a row are replaced with new symbols, thus setting off a chain reaction that can result in repeated wins. It comes with a bundle of features and a multi-level free spins bonus where you'll fight monsters of all shapes and sizes.

Without knowing what to expect, we fired up Wild Worlds and were instantly taken aback by the stylish art-deco designed intro which is nothing short of phenomenal. Visually, the actual game does not disappoint either and it only takes a second to understand that we're dealing with a slot that is anything but traditional. Set inside what appears to be a command centre, our three chromatic superhero vertebrates are seen sitting in front of their computer screens, busy saving the world as giant monsters raise hell in the background - all to the beat of a synthesiser sound loop.

Only taking up half of the screen, symbols on the reel set comprise of low to medium value green, purple and blue gems marked with feathers, lightning-bolts, waves and the beaks of the superheroes. There's also a single high win symbol as well as a wild - both worth 100 times your stake if you land 5 of a kind.

Wild Worlds (NetEnt): Features

Wild Worlds is a busy slot with an array of features. In the base game, the Destroy Feature may randomly activate following a dead spin - symbols of only one colour are left on the reels while the rest are removed, except for the scatter symbols. New symbols then drop onto the reels, substantially increasing the chance of landing winning combinations.

Also in the base game, landing winning combinations comprised of medium-win symbols (Hero symbol) will transform all other symbols of the same type into wilds. This feature is known as the Hero Wilds feature.

The real action starts when you land 3 scatter symbols anywhere on the reels - this will initiate the bonus with 8 free spins. The bonus is made up of three levels, each with unique features and with the Hero Wilds feature in play throughout. Progress is made by defeating monsters with the help of Hero Attacks and Hero Special Attacks. The three worlds are:

  • Dark Forest - Spreading Wilds are placed randomly on the reels when the weak spot of a monster is destroyed.
  • Ice World - a stack of 2 Heavy Wild symbols is placed randomly on the reels when the weak spot of a monster is destroyed.
  • Fire Lands - between 2 and 4 random wild symbols are placed randomly on the reels when the weak spot of a monster is destroyed.

There are two types of alien monsters in Wild Worlds:

  • Captains (15 health points) - when defeated, the wild feature of the particular level is activated.
  • The Boss (105 health points) - cannot be damaged unless all Captains have been defeated. If The Boss falls, the feature is re-triggered and the player is transferred to the next world to do battle with a set of new monsters and with 8 free spins in the bag.

To battle the monsters, our feathered superheroes make use of their super powers. Every winning combination comprised of Hero symbols will deal damage to the monsters and charge the corresponding Hero meter positioned below each super hero. If the meter is filled, a Hero Special Attack is carried out with damage of varying degree depending on the hero striking the monsters.

Wild Worlds (NetEnt): Verdict

As you can tell, Wild Worlds is a relatively complicated slot, although it's more confusing in theory than in practice. With that said, the free spins bonus does have a rather steep learning curve and the first few rounds will likely turn out to be a wtf moment for many punters. It's undoubtedly overwhelming initially and it's not the kind of slot that you leave on auto-spin while you go make yourself a cup of coffee. It demands your attention and does an excellent job at making you feel involved. In that sense, Wild Worlds has the feel of a video game which is probably what the developers were going for here.

The main focus here is to keep players entertained. Multi-level slots are not new to the industry, but we have to say that NetEnt has managed to take it to the next level (no pun intended). There are so many layers and dimensions to Wild Worlds and even if you're not particularly fond of modern slots, there's still a good chance that it will keep you entertained for a few spins. A medium variance game, it's not too brutal on the balance either. We're a bit surprised ourselves, but it's a yes from us.
