The Invisible Man: Slot Overview

Developer NetEnt has teamed up with Universal Pictures to bring players a branded slot based on the timeless tale, The Invisible Man. The slot version is based on the classic 1933 film, featuring a man wrapped in cloth so you could actually see where he was. It was called by many the first great American science fiction film, starring Hollywood legend Claude Rains as the chap no one could see. The story originated in the creative mind of H.G. Wells, he of War of the Worlds and The Time Traveller fame. NetEnt's slot stays true to the movie's spirit, giving players a cinematic game in which to try their luck, surrounded by characters, features, and old Hollywood charm.

Released in 2014, NetEnt's The Invisible Man has a great look that has stood the test of time well. Its action is hosted on a 5-reel, 20-payline grid, providing plenty of atmosphere. This is supplied by by the 30s lettering, smooth animations, colourful characters, and the overall noir feel. Base game action takes place in a lab in the town of Iping. This is where Griffin concocted a formula which successfully turns him invisible but does not turn him back, leaving him trapped in his imperceptible form. In a final homage to the film, some of the movie's soundtrack can be enjoyed while spinning its reels.

Living in a town terrorised by an invisible man might be terrifying, but the slot version isn't quite such a chilling prospect. This is in part due to a hit rate of 29%, meaning nearly one spin in three turns up a winner. What also helps here is that the game pays both ways across its paylines, so left to right as well as right to left, starting from the first or last reels. The RTP is respectable as well on 96.3%, yet the game's potential isn't exactly massive. Decent wins can be picked up along the way though via a math model running on medium volatility. Chasing the invisible man can take place on any device by selecting an appropriate stake from 20 p/c to £/€100.

NetEnt has divided the paytable into a 50/50 mix of low pay card royals designed in a clean metallic font and 5 characters from the film. From low to high, we meet Mrs Hall, Mr Hall, Dr Cranley, Arthur Kemp, and Flora Cranley; all dolled up like they were in the 30s; 5 premium symbols on a line have a base value of 7.5x to 25x the bet, though since the game pays both ways, those amounts are doubled when they occur. Included are 3 wilds as well, appearing as part of features where two more characters are introduced.

The Invisible Man: Slot Features

At any stage of the game, Police Wilds or Griffin Wilds may appear – both can replace any pay symbol to complete winning combinations. If they both land at the same time, the respin feature is triggered. Police Wilds appear on reel 1 and move 1 reel to the right during respins, while Griffin wilds land on the 5th reel, moving left by 1 reel. It is possible to land additional wilds on a respin to keep the feature going. Respins end after all wilds have fallen off the reels.

If a Griffin Wild and a Police Wild are on the same row during a respin, they lock and merge when they clash. At the end of the current spin, wins are paid, then 10 free spins are activated. During free spins, the two Walking Wilds can now land on any reel, triggering respins as before. Now when the 2 wilds clash on the same reel, +4 more free spins are awarded.

Above the reels in free spins are 2 meters, corresponding to the 2 wilds. Whenever one of the wilds falls off the reels, 1 space is marked on the meter. When 8 spaces are filled before free spins end, a corresponding bonus feature is awarded, when free spins end. The Police Spins bonus feature consists of 3 free spins where 5 randomly placed flaming wilds appear on the reels. Each of the 5 wilds appears in a random position for each spin. These wilds do not walk across the reels.

Finally, there is the Griffins Rage pick & click bonus game made up of 3 rounds in 3 different locations, such as the Lion's Head Inn, The Manson, and Iping Station. Each location provides clickable icons which reveal prizes of 1x to 10x, +1 to the round multiplier (up to x4), or an end of stage item that moves players to the next location. When the final end-stage item has been revealed, the total coin win is multiplied by the round multiplier, and the feature concludes.

The Invisible Man: Slot Verdict

A likely concern with The Invisible Man is that it's not exactly a high potential slot. Cutting straight to the chase, the most you can win amounts to 1,000x the bet in a single spin which is far from a King's ransom nowadays. If you can see past this point, then what you'll find is one of the better-branded slots on the market. NetEnt has made fabulous use of the old classic film, incorporating many of its memorable moments on the reels.

Another nice thing about The Invisible Man is that NetEnt hasn't relied on the brand to do all of the work. Instead, they've not only recreated the world of Iping but filled it with clever features which build off or link to each other. You might not be able to win massive amounts of coins, yet there is loads of fun to be had along the way, exploring various locations around town and their associated features.

All up, there is plenty for film buffs or regular players to enjoy when playing The Invisible Man. There's the epic showdown between law and invisible man, diabolical science experiments in a lab, most of the main characters, not to mention video clips, and sound effects taken straight from the movie. In short, few have made the cross-over from silver screen to reels as well as NetEnt has done with their branded slot The Invisible Man.
