Blessed Flame is an interesting-looking new slot by Evoplay that boasts a unique cartoon-like art style that I don’t remember seeing in any previous online slots. The first point for originality goes to the developers then, but there’s a long way to go before declaring this game to be a winner! The graphics are not the only unusual aspect of Blessed Flame, as this slot also offers 1,024 payways in its base game, increasing to a tidy 6,300 during the free spin bonus round. As for the maximum win, that comes in at 1,560x bet, whilst the game also sticks to the industry average RTP of 96%.

There is a handful of features to discuss, starting with two special types of wild symbols named the Olympic Wild – a four-high stack – and the Giant Wild, which appears in a 2x3 configuration. Each of these wilds has a corresponding re-spin feature triggered whenever two matching special wilds appear on a single spin. It seems that two is the magic number in Blessed Flame, as a ”Coin of Destiny” is also featured sporting two sides to determine a decision when needed, along with two different free spin modes.

I’m confident that many readers here will be much more interested in giving this machine a try instead of reading my thoughts on it, so here’s the all-important free demo slot of Blessed Flame ready to play for your enjoyment!

The title of this game can be attached to several meanings, so I thought it might be prudent to look at what the developers had to say regarding the theme and inspiration behind Blessed Flame. As it turns out, this isn’t a slot based on the 2016 anarchist’s handbook by Serafinski, but a Greek mythology inspired game representing an almighty battle between powerful monsters and brave deities, a story of good vs evil, two sides of a coin. Aha, the meaning of all that duopoly in the feature set suddenly comes into focus! However, this does lower the game's score for originality, as Greek mythology is a very common theme for online slots. Recent examples include Book of Helios, Cresus Fortunes, and Gods of Troy, but as a mature genre, there are countless more examples out there – Playtech’s “Age of Gods” mega-franchise includes well over a dozen games alone.

Let’s get back on point now with a peek at the paytable offered by Blessed Flame. The table features several categories, with two equally high-scoring groups sharing the limelight at the front of the pack. These are the “Olympians” and the “Giants” as the good and bad guys, respectively, but Evoplay hasn’t named any of them as far as I can tell. The highest-paying pair are the white-haired Olympian and the green monster, both of which are worth 5x the bet for a full payway of five-of-a-kind, followed by the females at 2x each for all five symbols, and finally a ginger Olympian and what looks to be a Xenomorph(!) at 1.5x your stake each for a full payway. Wow, I wasn’t expecting things to take such a dark turn so quickly! The “Elements” group makes up the rest of the paytable and features representations of the four playing card suits with returns of either 0.7x or 0.5x your bet for five-of-a-kind.

As for the betting range, hitting the plus or minus buttons will open a new screen where you can choose your wager. This feels a little unnecessary as there are no quick bet buttons or anything like that, but you do at least have the option to bet as low as €0.10 per round or as much as €200.00, which is probably a tad excessive.

With your choice of bet selected, it's time to try the base game, which utilises a 5x4 reel set with 1,024 payways and a whole bunch of stacked symbols that make it almost impossible to win on less than two or three pay ways simultaneously. It’s a nice looking game with a unique art style, as mentioned in the opening paragraph, but I soon found myself growing tired of the monotony of it all, wondering when I would get to see one of the many features I had read about on the paytable.

Olympic Wild & Olympic Respins
Wild symbols work in an unusual manner in Blessed Flame, as the game doesn’t include a “permanent” wild, instead opting to create “situational” wilds out of any of the high-paying symbols when certain conditions are met.

The first such condition occurs if two identical Olympians appear in identical positions on reels one and five. The Olympians now become wild, and a free re-spin is awarded with both Olympians now positioned as full stacks of wilds, meaning that you only need to be lucky on the centre three reels to win yourself some serious money!

Giant Wild & Giant Respins
Similar to the Olympic features described above, hitting two groups of identical giant symbols on the centre three reels will transform those symbols into Giant Wilds, and a free re-spin will be awarded.

Your giant symbols will now become wild and are held in place for the duration of the re-spin. If three scatter symbols happen to land on a re-spin during either of these modes, this will guarantee that the free spins you receive will be of the same type – either Olympian or Giant.

Scatter symbols appear on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th reels only in Blessed Flame, and hitting all three of these will award six free spins. There are two free spin modes, and the type you will receive is determined by a flip of the Coin of Destiny before the bonus round starts.

Olympic Free Spins
During free spins, the reel set is expanded into a 5-6-7-6-5 high configuration, increasing the number of payways from the default 1,024 to a massive 6,300. While testing the game, I found that the increased playfield size meant I would almost always trigger a win on every free spin.

During the Olympic Free Spins, one Olympic Wild is guaranteed to appear on the reels in every round. Additionally, Olympians can appear on all five reels in this mode instead of featuring on reels one and five only during the base game.

Giant Free Spins
The Giant free spins utilise the same expanded reel set as the Olympic version, but one Giant Wild is now guaranteed to appear on each spin instead of the Olympic variety. Again, Giant Wilds now appear on all five reels instead of being limited to reels two, three, and four only as they are during the base game!

There probably isn’t much difference between the two types of free spins in real terms, but my own experience of this game showed a definite advantage in terms of my winnings for these Giant Free Spins. Your mileage may vary, as they say, but I was consistently more successful in this feature than the Olympic one during my testing… the bad guys win this time, I guess!

My feelings about this game started very positively before taking a dip, but it eventually won me over after playing a decent number of bonus rounds. It does feel quite challenging to get to the features, but when you do, the winnings feel worth it. However, the base game is a little dull, so it’s a shame that no bonus buy feature was included.
