Ring of Odin: Slot Overview

Developers Play’n GO has released a few games recently based on Egyptian mythology, but it’s been a while since they dropped that other crowd-pleaser - Norse mythology. This time the focus is on the King of Asgard, namely Odin. If ever the mood strikes to play a game with a seriously epic character, then Odin’s your guy. A few examples. He sired Thor, one of the hardest men in any pantheon. The dude even gave up one of his eyes to gain unspeakable knowledge of the universe, and his spear could never miss, literally, thanks to dwarven blacksmiths. If there is one theme that can stir the blood, it’s Norse mythology. The danger for developers taking it on is that if the effort is half-hearted, it's all too obvious. When done well though, Norse mythology and slots go together like petrol and fire.

Ring of Odin is another visual stunner from Play’n GO. When they want to, they can sure paint a pleasing picture. The static imagery is backed up by slick animations which add a bit more oomph to the game. And you really need that sort of thing. If you’re going to base a slot around the All-Father, you gotta make the guy look powerful. Ring does that by including a bunch of Odin’s accoutrements, such as ravens, a grim one-eyed stare, and the ring itself. Let’s just say the treatment of the theme does the big guy justice.

Time to size up the grid which is comprised of 5 reels, 3 rows and 10 fixed paylines - neat and simple. Rules follow the same pattern of simplicity. Winning combinations are formed by three or more matching symbols land left to right on any of the 10 paylines. Symbols are a little creepy but are nicely representative of the theme. On the low side are four Runic engravings on green, purple, blue, and red stones. The high pays are wolves, ravens, the eight-legged horse, and Odin’s spear Gungnir as the most valuable at 30 times the stake for five. Odin, meanwhile, is used as the wild which is of the same value as the top regular symbol.

So on to the nitty-gritty, which begins with bet selection. Ring of Odin uses Play’n GO’s slick menu bar which accepts bets from 10 p/c to £/€100 per spin. RTP can vary from the default figure of 96.20% and lowered to 94.2% or below depending on the casino and jurisdiction. As always check the rules before piling in the coins. Ring of Odin’s volatility is not as high as it gets with Play’n GO which clocks in at 7 out of 10 on the rating scale. That is still quite high and leaves room for the features to shine.

Ring of Odin: Slot Features

Ring of Odin comes with several features that open up play, some that appear at random, some that need to be triggered. During base game, Odin’s Ring is a feature that can activate on any spin. Any symbol that lands within it becomes the chosen symbol. A respin follows with the grid imposed with Odin’s Rings. If the chosen symbol lands in one or more of the rings, they trigger Draupnir Respins. For this feature, the number of chosen symbols that landed in Odin’s Rings is the number of respins that are awarded – up to 9. When Draupnir Respins are triggered, the chosen symbol is duplicated in the middle three reels for the duration of the feature.

Free Spins come in two forms. The first is the standard Free Spins game which comes into play when 3 Odin’s eye scatter symbols land on reels 1, 3, and 5. Starting with 4 spins, any scatter that lands adds +1 free spin to the round. In the free spins game you'll benefit from Odin's Ring always being active and that's pretty much it.

Even better are the enhanced Multiplier Free Spins. These are triggered via Odin’s Ring. If the ring appears on screen, and a scatter lands within it, then it triggers 4 Multiplier Free Spins. During this feature, the scatter appears on reels 2, 3, or 4 for a single respin. Any scatters that land in Odin’s Rings on the middle three reels adds +1 to the multiplier up to a maximum of x9. When the feature is in play any scatters that land add +1 multiplier free spin. Moreover, the multiplier is active for the duration of the round.

The features are a little tricky to describe in writing but hopefully that paints a picture of what they can do. As usual, they make perfect sense once you’ve seen them in action once or twice. The final point is that features can be triggered together. When that happens, respins, including Draupnir Respins are played first before free spins begin.

Ring of Odin: Slot Verdict
Play’n GO makes this look easy. They consistently pump out good looking slots with just enough atmosphere and features to make them an attractive prospect. It's all there really, from a well-balanced math model to superb audiovisual design. Once again Play’n GO has pulled in imagery and niche symbols to build a singular game world in which to try your luck. It won't necessarily win the slot of the year award, but nevertheless, it's a solid, well crafted slot that is both engaging and beautiful to look at.

You get the feeling Play’n GO could make solid slots with both hands tied behind their back. Perhaps because they produce so many games of decent quality, it makes it harder for anything they create to really stand out. Ring of Odin is guilty of the same. There is nothing negative to report, stats are respectable, and the game is easy on the eyes. It’s just that Ring of Odin feels like another above-average Play’n GO slot that possibly could have been even greater if the developers weren’t so busy already working on the next title on the production schedule.
