Saxon: Slot Overview

Developer Play’n GO expands their branded rock range of slots with a game based on veterans of the English metal scene Saxon. Alongside the straight forward gaming, players get to blast several Saxon tunes, while spinning for stacked symbols, win multipliers, and free spins.

Formed in the late 1970s, Saxon helped established the vanguard of the new wave of British heavy metal. The band still performs and its current line up even stars a couple of the original members. Key among them is frontman Peter Rodney Byford, or 'Biff', which is a far more metal name. One of the benefits of being a singer when it comes to slots is that you get some face time, while the rest of the band often fades away into oblivion. Not even in the background do we get a peep of other members such as guitarist Paul Quinn – and he's been there since 1977.

We do get to hear his blistering axe work, however, as the slot features several of the band's tracks to bop along to. Select individual song from the menu bar including hits such as 747 (Strangers in the Night) and Heavy Metal Thunder. Incidentally, these are two of Biff's personal favourites from Saxon's back catalogue for your listening pleasure.

The game is also heavy on the rock on roll imagery. Set in a bar amidst a feast of chrome, liquor bottles, and leather jackets, the game utilises a standard 5-reel, 10-payline set up. There’s also plenty of motorcycle references, even shots of Biff all saddled up on one. Mathematically, players are challenged by a default RTP setting of 96.24% along with high, though not maximum, volatility rated 8 out of 10 on the Play'n GO volatility meter.

Playable from 10 p/c to £/€100 per spin, Saxon makes use of 8 regular symbols - 5 low, 3 high, though all offer quite good values. In the low section you will find clubs, diamonds, spades, hearts and diamonds. Land five of this lot for payouts of 7 to 12 times the stake. High pays are naturally worth more on 20 to 30 times the bet, where you will find helms, eagle insignias, and a boss Saxon leather jacket.

The hard as nails wild symbol always occupies a full reel, substituting for all symbols except the scatter. It is also the most valuable symbol with a line of five giving you 50 times the bet. Of course, if you've got five of a kind, it means a full screen of wilds which is worth a whole lot more.

Saxon: Slot Features

All symbols in the game, bar the scatters, can land stacked, filling a full reel. Each reel of stacked symbols increases the win multiplier by +1. If the symbols involved are stacked wilds, the multiplier is increased by +2 instead. Each new base game spin resets the win multiplier.

The two remaining symbols are the singer and motorcycle scatters. If you land both in view at the same, then a random number of 5 to 15 free spins is awarded. Keep in mind, any active win multiplier from the triggering spin is carried over to the feature.

Adding fire to free spins is the fact that the win multiplier does not reset. There is also no limit to the bonus game since landing 2 or more scatters awards a fresh batch of 5 to 15 more spins.

Saxon: Slot Verdict
The gaming might be a little old-school, but that’s all good - so is the band, and they're still going strong. It's hard to look past Saxon if you're into honest, no-nonsense gameplay. In fact, these are hallmarks of many slots in the Play’n GO rock range.

The only major sticking point is if you aren't into the particular band in question. If you're in the mood to rock, however, they serve up dependably good gameplay, backed by tight math models. Saxon is no different. It looks great, packs plenty of 'tude and has it where it counts, as the saying goes. The band makes the transition to the reels effortlessly and fans will be stoked to know Biff looks just as badass as ever on a Harley.

Stacked symbols and multipliers keep the base game jamming, while no limit free spins are the icing on the cake. Or the lemon after the tequila shot, if you will. Saxon might not be the hardest rocking slot in Play’n GO's music range. That honour goes to Testament which blew doors off in almost all regards.

Saxon has the less complicated gameplay, but its action is no less head bang inducing. This metaphor extends to potential, where wins of up to 10,000 times the bet are possible, pushing Saxon into the higher end of the Play’n GO's paying spectrum.

All up, Saxon has a high graphical standard, is easy on the eye, and is backed by somewhat unoriginal yet entertaining features. While naturally better suited to fans of the band, the Saxon slot has the goods to entertain other players not quite so enamoured with dinosaur rock.
