Lord Merlin and the Lady of the lake: Slot Overview

Developer Play'n GO follows up their 2019 Arthurian release Rise of Merlin with Lord Merlin and the Lady of the Lake. At the core of it all we once again get more ‘Book of’ style expanding symbols, though several additions make it a more than worthy sequel. Lord Merlin and the Lady of the Lake proudly continues the long tradition of these types of games, its premise thus making it a tempting option for players who like big volatility coupled with big potential to go with the expanding special symbol action.

Lord Merlin and the Lady of the Lake moves the story from the original’s snowy confines to a picturesque outdoor setting. Here, the 5x3 grid shares screen space alongside twisted lakeside trees, loads of lily pads, and the clear blue sky of a gorgeous English day. Deep in the lake’s depths is where the mysterious Lady resided, providing Arthur with his sword Excalibur, a name also given to one of the new features found in the game.

Available on any device, players can take part in the old legends by selecting bets from 1 p/c (one payline) up to £/€100 per spin, and, if they wish, playlines from between 1 to 10 in true old school fashion. Like paylines, RTP too is flexible, so make sure you’re getting the best deal, being the default setting of 96.2%. Volatility, meanwhile, is high, meaning Merlin can blow his lid at any time, playing well with the higher than average potential usually found in a game like this.

Regular wins hit when three or more low pays or at least two high pays land on a payline starting from the first reel. As to symbols, low pays are made up of 10-A card royals, while the highs are a crest, a hat, a staff, and Merlin himself at the top of the table. Symbols values are big, where lines of five premiums are worth payouts of 75 to 1,000 times your stake. Merlin offers the same value as the Lady, who is wild. As well as being worth a stack of coins, she substitutes any of the regular symbols to complete a win.

Lord Merlin and the Lady of the lake: Slot Features
In Lord Merlin and the Lady of the Lake, it’s all about special expanding symbols which appear in the free spins and Excalibur Spins. With a new expanding symbol on each free spin, its fixed on Excalibur Spins. This can lead to 10,000 x stake wins on each spin.

Free Spins feature
The Excalibur symbol is the scatter. When you land 3 or ore scatters anywhere on the reels, you will activate the Free Spins feature with an 8 initial free spins. A random royal or high value symbol is chosen on each free spin to become the special expanding symbol.

Like in other games like Legacy of Dead, the chosen expanding symbol can give you winning combinations across non-adjacent reels. If a high value symbol is chosen (not a royal basically), you only need 2 of them anywhere on the reels to give you a winning outcome. For a royal expanding symbol, you will need 3.

Your potential win per free spin depends on the special expanding symbol you get. Here’s what each of them offers:

Excalibur Spins feature
During the free spins, the scatter transforms into a wild scatter symbol. Substituting for all symbols, 2, 3, 4 or 5 wild scatters will pay 1, 10, 100 or 1,000 x your total stake. 2 or more wild scatters triggers the Excalibur Spins feature.

Every wild scatter gives you 1 Excalibur Spin. The chosen special expanding symbol then locks for the whole feature. This can expand on all Excalibur Spins. 2 or more wild scatters retriggers the feature giving you more Excalibur Spins, with no limits. It’s quite similar to how the Pyramid Spins feature works in the Cat Wilde and the Lost Chapter slot.

Lord Merlin and the Lady of the Lake: Slot Verdict
If there is something Play'n GO does well, and there are several things we could expound on here, it is ‘Book of’ slots. Lord Merlin and the Lady of the Lake continues this tradition, being another exceptional example in the genre. We all know, ‘Book of’ slots abound, yet Play'n GO releases generally manage to stand out - each one for a different reason. Of course, much of the hype comes down to their gold standard Book of Dead which has had a huge impact on the genre. When it comes to Lord Merlin and the Lady of the Lake, there are several arguments as to why players might want to choose this one over the countless others.

Firstly it’s not an Egypt based game. Not that there is anything wrong with setting a ‘Book of’ slot in its country of origin, but it’s always nice to have options. The location Play'n GO has chosen is certainly idyllic, oozing mystery provided by the well-known story of Arthur, Merlin, and the Lady of the Lake. In typical Play'n GO style, they’ve made the visuals a treat to look at, full of smooth animations, and fitting effects.

Then there is the gameplay, which is a significant cut above most in this category, despite being the same as Cat Wilde and the Lost Chapter. For players chasing massive wins, potential will be enough to encourage a spin a two. Due to double the value of the highest premium compared to games like Book of Dead or the original Rise of Merlin, single spin wins of 10,000 times the bet are possible. Incidentally, this figure is the games full potential. On another positive note, the max win occurred once in around 2.37 million spins, making it a far cry from the billions, or even hundreds of billions we usually see.

Okay, it might be 'Cat Wilde and the Lost Chapter by a Lake', but that doesn’t stop Lord Merlin being another highly enjoyable game from Play'n GO. It makes an excellent follow up to the medieval styles found in Rise of Merlin, upping the ante in every respect. For players who enjoy a highly volatile ‘Book’ slot with monster potential and a great twist, you can’t go wrong taking this Lord or Lady on.
