The Faces of Freya: Slot Overview

In slots, well, in pop culture in general, we get loads of male deities, Thor, Odin, even Loki, but few thrust the ladies of Norse mythology centre stage. Evidence perhaps, that despite all our talk of modern equality, vestiges of a patriarchal society continues to cling on. And it's not like Freya was one of those stay at home goddesses who tended the hearth, making sure Odr's axe was sharp, and his belly full of mead. According to certain Eddic poems, Freya allegedly slept with the elves, gods, and even her brother. She was also an accomplished volva, practising a type of Norse magic called seidhr, bringing it to humans as well as the gods. All in all, a fascinating figure who is well overdue some time in the spotlight.

That then brings us to The Faces of Freya from Swedish developer Play' n GO. We might have said this before, yet one of the benefits of Play' n GO's insanely busy schedule is they have to dream up all manner of topics to theme their games. Some work better than others of course, but this one shows real promise. It certainly looks good, and like the unusual choice of subject matter, they have also portrayed a rich summer image, making a nice change from the icy wastes that usually accompany a Norse themed slot.

The Faces of Freya is played out using 5 reels and 20 fixed paylines amidst thick summer grass near water, while steep hills form the border of what could be a fjord in the background. It's a peaceful scene, and a fair representation of Folkvangr, the heavenly field for those who died in battle (and weren't sent to Valhalla), which Freya rules over. You can also make out the outlines of mythical silhouettes such as a dragon to the left and some other unknown beast to the right. The reels have an almost Celtic pattern inscribed on them, adding to the magic, creating an ideal setting for the goddess of beauty, fertility, sex, and war to chill.

It almost feels crude to talk numbers in this environment, but let's get down to business. Players can step in Freya's domain on any device, where there are stake options ranging from 20 p/c per spin to £/€100. The Faces of Freya appears to be a game Play'n GO is aiming at casual gamblers perhaps due to its medium volatility. The RTP, meanwhile, is variable as it always is from this team, where the default setting clocks in at 96.2%.

Symbols used include four low pay card suits, made to look like runes, followed by axes, a boar, the cats that pulled Freya's chariot, and her bracelet. Five of a kind combinations made of premium symbols returns a prize worth 10 to 17.5x the bet. Freya herself is wild, as in the wild symbol, landing on any reel to substitute any of the regular pays. Get a line of five Freya wilds to collect a win of 20x the bet.

The Faces of Freya: Slot Features
When it comes to features, its free spins all the way with four varieties up for grabs. Freya's necklace Brisingamen is the scatter, and landing exactly 3 of them randomly triggers one of the 3 lesser free spins games – Spins of Sorcery, Spins of Love, or Spins of War. Landing 4 or 5 scatters unlocks the 'ultimate' free spins – Folkvang.

The 3 lesser rounds start with 6 free spins and certain modifiers. In the Spins of Sorcery bonus, axe, boar, and cat symbols can upgrade to higher value symbols. In the Spins of Love bonus between 2 to 5 wilds are added to each spin – one per reel max. And finally, in the Spins of War bonus a multiplier of x2 to x20 is applied to all wins. Each bonus round is extended by +1 free spin for every scatter that lands.

The big one is Folkvang free spins, triggered which comes with 4 different levels to play through. In total, 18 or 19 free spins are awarded using a scatter collection system throughout:

Level 1: Spins of Sorcery – 5 spins where axe symbols are upgraded to boars at the start. Collect 3 scatters to upgrade boars to cats, then 5 scatters to upgrade cats to bracelets.
Level 2: Spins of Love – 5 spins starting with 2 random wilds per spin. Collect 3, 5, or 7 scatters to increase the number of wilds to 3, 4, or 5.

Level 3: Spins of War – 5 spins where a win multiplier starts at x2, rising to x3x, x5, x10 and x20 when 3, 5, 7, or 9 scatters are collected.
Level 4: Spins of Folkvang – all of the modifiers achieved in the previous 3 levels are activated. Players get 3 or 4 spins here depending on whether the feature was initially trigged from the base game by 4 or 5 scatters.

The Faces of Freya: Slot Verdict
The Faces of Freya is another dependable Play' n GO release which squeezes as much possible out of the theme by ramming in everything Freya related. Some players might not find it volatile enough on paper, but it is a game that can blow when the right spark is lit. Having different free spin tiers may well sway some of the doubters. It certainly makes for fine gaming should you manage to trigger Folkvang spins, which have the potential to get chaotic.

In fact, making it to the final level of Folkvang spins with a substantial collection of modifiers most likely means good things are going to happen. So much so Play'n GO has added a win cap, cutting things off if the game hits 5,000 times the stake. The Faces of Freya is pretty all or nothing though, since outside of free spins, you can't expect Freya to part with many riches. One nice touch is that landing two scatters can be enough to trigger one of the lower free spins rounds, as the third may nudge into view if you're lucky.

Once again Play'n GO makes this look easy, expanding their mid-level volatile game range with another excellent option. Patience is required through much of the base game, yet landing four or more scatters feels like you've gained the lady's favour.
