Thunder Screech: Slot Overview

Helping players get their recommended dose of (virtual) vitamin D is Play'n GO’s outdoor-themed slot Thunder Screech. Set in the majestic North American countryside, Thunder Screech offers a reliable dose of fairly predictable gameplay, utilising features such as sticky wild multipliers and free spins. Providing a minor twist, Thunder Screech uses less common wildlife to populate a unique presentation of this picturesque part of the planet.

While researching Thunder Screech we happened upon a rather interesting piece of military history. Instead of diving into Native American culture and uncovering a profoundly spiritual meaning of the title, the concatenated word Thunderscreech refers to an experimental aircraft from the 1950s. Its official designation was the Republic XF-84H, but it was un-affectionately known as the Thunderscreech and was the loudest aircraft ever made. The problem was its propeller rotated faster than the speed of sound, creating a continuous sonic boom. Not only could it be heard 40km away, but the propeller provoked seizures, and the noise it created caused ground crew to become physically sick.

Thunder Screech the slot is a much more peaceful experience. Very peaceful in fact, where a 5-reel, 10-payline grid has been set in an idyllic setting which brought back pleasant memories of reviewing Red Tigers’ slot Kulta Jaska. Both are located in the sort of rural setting where you can actually hear your thoughts shift from one to another. The kind of place where the sky seems bigger than normal, where birds of prey circle at great heights, where the wind blowing through distant trees sounds like mountain spirits. The kind of place city dwellers would benefit from escaping to but rarely have the time. In short, Thunder Screech is attractive autumnal arcadia, with a touch of Native American culture.

Back to the business at hand, Thunder Screech may be played on any device, offering bets of 10 p/c to £/€100 per spin. If you think a highly volatile math model would be out of place in such an idyllic setting, then Play’n GO would seem to agree. Instead, they’ve dialled volatility down to a medium setting, rating it 6 out of 10. RTP is variable so look out for that. The preferable version being the default value of 96.2%.

Nature themes the paytable as well, starting with low pay 10-A royals which look like they’ve been knocked together using spare bits of wood. More wood is used to frame the high pays, consisting of beavers, otters, skunks, foxes and crows. For the most part, it’s not the animals generally used in these sorts of games, making it a nice change from dodging stampedes of buffalo. Five of a kind values are quite high too, where premium combinations payout from 10 to 75 times your stake.

Thunder Screech: Slot Features

There’s a strong Native American feel to the design in the Thunder Screech slot. It’s not based on the aircraft with the same name. With a forest in the background, the reels are set within a pair of intricately carved totem poles. The imagery is bright and bold and very easy on the eye. It’s a typically well-designed slot from Play ‘n GO.

On the canvas-style reels, you’ll find stylized A to 10 royals alongside 5 higher paying animal symbols. The best paying symbol is the raven which will get you an award equal to 7.5, 15 or 75 x your total stake if you manage to land 3, 4 or 5 of them across a payline.

The carved Thunderbird totem is the wild. This can land on the middle 3 reels only and substitute for everything apart from the scatter when it forms part of a winning combination. Wilds can also come with multipliers attached when you trigger the Strike and Free Spins features. We’ll look at these in detail shortly. Rounding out the symbols is the Dream Catcher which is the scatter.

Thunder Screech Bonus Features
In Thunder Screech, wilds are the key success. There are 2 randomly triggered features that add extra wills and re-spins with multiplier wilds. There’s also a free spins bonus with even more wild goodies.

Strike feature

The Strike feature can also trigger at random on any base game spin. The standard wilds are upgraded to Thunder Wilds which come with 1x, 2x or 3x multiplier values attached. These symbols trigger a re-spin when they land with their multiplier increasing by 1 with each re-spin until it reaches 3x.

If there’s more than 1 Thunder Wild present on the same spin, the value of the multipliers are added together. This means that you can get a multiplier boost of up to 9x. The feature continues until all the Thunder Wilds have dropped off the reels.

Free Spins feature

Land the Dreamcatcher scatter symbols on reels 1, 3 and 5 on the same spin to trigger the Free Spins feature. Your reward here is 5 free spins. That’s not a huge allocation. There are extra opportunities to win courtesy of re-spins.

During this feature, all wilds are upgraded to Thunder Wilds. You’re guaranteed to land 1 of these on each free spin. Other Thunder Wilds can land naturally throughout the free spins too.

These Thunder Wilds come with the usual re-spin and multiplier extras. This means multipliers up to 9x on each re-spin. When you’ve used up all of your free spins, the re-spins continue until all the Thunder Wilds have disappeared from the game grid.

Call feature
The Call feature can activate randomly on any base game spin. The Thunderbird unleashes between 5 and 9 wilds onto the reels.

Thunder Screech: Slot Verdict
It’s pretty obvious, but let’s state it anyway by saying Thunder Screech isn’t the Play’n GO team flexing their considerable design chops. The simple 10 payline gaming can spark, though not in the explosive way a ‘book of’ slot can do as a comparison. Still, sticky wild multipliers are certainly capable of producing thrills during respins and free spins. Max win sits in the region of 5,000 times the stake, which has a probability of being hit once every 100 million spins or so.

It all means Thunder Screech could well be an enjoyable game for players who don’t want to go all-in crazy. Mid-level volatility is combined with good stats (provided you’re playing the default RTP version), and potential is solid too. Thunder Screech isn’t the kind of game which is set to ignite high light reels, yet that’s not really its purpose. What is its purpose then? In part, yes it does have a filler vibe, but this being Play’n GO, their filler slots are still playable slots. Thunder Screech is a good looking game too, evoking a naturalist response we explored in possibly a little too much detail in the overview section.

For players in the mood for some North American themed gaming, with a hint of Native American mysticism that’s not highly volatile and doesn’t involve wolves or buffalo, Thunder Screech could be alright. Anyone outside this narrow scope will probably need to compromise or choose a different game.
