Beasts of Fire: Slot Overview

Beasts of Fire is an online video slot from Play'n GO that comes with a pretty interesting story. It's set in the Great Plains, which according to the game sheet, was struck centuries ago by a meteor 'like no other', landing smack bang on a buffalo herd. Now you might think such a strike would result in a scene of devastation, but instead of taking out the wildlife, the meteor instilled in the herd a non-terrestrial fiery energy. Thus, was born Beasts of Fire, a game built around stacked symbols, expanding reels and ways, free spins, plus respins, all wrapped in a peculiar tale.

You might think a game located in an area called the Great Plains would be a lot flatter than it is in Beasts of Fire. Instead of wide expanses of grass stretching off to what seems like the ends of the earth, Beasts of Fire is backgrounded by snow-capped mountains – and not overly inviting ones either. These mountains look like they are about to be blasted by a blizzard, and it's tough to imagine animals struggling for survival in this environment. However, the Great Plains in the United States are bordered by the Rocky Mountains, so it all makes sense. Beasts of Fire's imposing view has a muscular rocky feel and a touch of mysticism, a bit like Kalamba Game's Blazing Bull or Blazing Bull 2.
Playable from 10 p/c to £/€100 per spin, the gaming itself takes place on a 5-reel grid, aligned in a 3-4-4-4-3 layout. Ways vary from 576 by default all the way up to 12,348 during Meteor Respins. Rated 7 out of 10, volatility leans towards the medium/high range of the spectrum, while RTP comes in a variety of configurations – 96.24% being the most optimal.

Wins occur when matching symbols land left to right from the leftmost reel, any row is permissible. All paying symbols need at least 3 to do so, except the top premium, which pays out when 2 or more land. The high pay symbol in question is a buffalo, then followed by four other animal premiums – bears, cougars, eagles, and what looks like a badger, but we could be wrong. Regardless, winning combinations of five premium symbols are worth 3 to 6 times the stake. The remaining pay tiles are 10-A royals, worth 1.2 to 2.5x the bet for five of a kind. Appearing on reels 2, 3, or 4 is the landscape wild symbol. Wilds substitute all symbols except scatters or meteors.

Beasts of Fire: Slot Features
Beasts of Fire boasts an impressive max win figure, and chasing it requires using features such as Buffalo Stampede, Meteor Respins, and Burnin' Power Free Spins.
Charging Buffaloes
This feature may trigger randomly on any spin during the base game. When activated, the number of buffalo symbols on the reels is increased, thus increasing the hit rate and the chance of hitting something special.

Meteor Respins
Meteor Respin symbols appear on reel 3 only. Landing one of them triggers the respins feature. The height of all reels increases by +1, and there is a greater chance of triggering a Buffalo Stampede. During the respin, it is possible another meteor symbol hits, awarding another respin and increasing the reel height by +1. The reel height can be increased three times; when it hits this height, meteors are removed from the reels. Free spins cannot be triggered from respins as scatters are not available, and once any wins are paid, the reels return to their normal height for the next game round.

Burnin' Power Free Spins
Also appearing on reels 2, 3, or 4 is the golden scatter symbol. Landing 3 of them awards 10 Burnin' Power Free Spins. For free spins, the top-paying buffalo symbol is removed and is replaced by the fire beast symbol, which is worth double the amount. Meteor symbols remain on reel 3, triggering Meteor Respins when they land. In free spins, when reels expand, they stay at their expanded size until free spins end. Landing 3 scatters in the feature awards an additional +10 free spins. Once the initial batch of spins ends, the new lot begins starting at the default reel height.

Beasts of Fire: Slot Verdict
Considering how popular the buffalo trope is amongst game providers, it's interesting this is the first time Play'n GO has built a slot around them. However, the studio has used the North American outdoors before in games like Coywolf Cash or Thunder Screech, so it is well acquainted with this part of the world. Beasts of Fire is a moodier, higher stakes game than those two were, bringing together Play'n GO's expertise for producing fine wilderness visuals with a bunch of effective features that perform well, right across the board.

When breaking Beasts of Fire down into its individual parts, many of them have a familiarity, having appeared in the same or similar forms in previous Play'n GO slots. For example, a similar-ish reel layout was used recently for Kiss Reels of Rock, while the studio has a soft spot for reel expansions too. You can see why they favour these features, and when Beasts of Fire is going off, it is more than capable of dishing out thrilling gaming. Adding up the ability to drastically increase ways, combined with the fact all pay symbols may land stacked while possessing decent values (considering how many ways are possible), leads to winning potential of up to 25,000x the bet.

All up, Play'n GO has designed a slot as sturdy as the rocky mountains making up the game's background. Beasts of Fire isn't exactly a groundbreaker, but it comes with a batch of equally sturdy extras that include one-off random events like the Buffalo Stampede to keep players alert during the base game, and free spin/respin features, which at times complement each other nicely. The result is high-quality gaming, almost immersive enough to block out the studio's story of a meteor hurtling to earth and hitting a herd of buffalo.
