Undead Fortune: Slot Overview
Just speculating here, but the act of grave robbing has probably been around for as long as people have buried with their riches. Perhaps it was people planning to be entombed with their wealth who came up with the idea of zombies in an attempt to scare off would-be tomb raiders? Whatever the origin might be, players get a taste of the undead in an online slot from Hacksaw Gaming titled Undead Fortune which is another slot that reveals the darker side of Hacksaw Gaming's personality. It follows a path laid down by prior slots such as Hand of Anubis and Gladiator legends, expanding on Hacksaw Gaming's DuelReels mechanic whilst combining it with a treasure trove of features such as Walking duels, Expanding DuelReels, The Curse bonus round, and The Tomb bonus round.

Initially, Undead Fortune didn't make the same impact Hand of Anubis did which had a heavy atmosphere that felt like you'd been judged for your earthly deeds and been found wanting. Undead Fortune is chock full of horrifying images, including a huge, hooded cobra, but it didn't evoke the same level of despair. It's very lively, though, ironically, and soon enough, animated undead denizens will be lighting up the reels via the game's features and, hopefully, letting slip some of their fortunes.

Hacksaw Gaming slots do tend to lean on the volatile side, and if our test sessions are anything to go by, Undead Fortune certainly warrants its 4 out of 5 volatility rating. As per usual, it comes in a variety of RTP settings with a maximum value of 96.29%, which at that level has a hit frequency of 26.77%. When playing regularly, stakes of 10 p/c to £/€100 may be selected, available on mobile, desktop, or tablet devices.

Surrounded by hieroglyphically carved stone structure sits Undead Fortune's 5-reel, 4-row game panel. Running across it are 10 fixed paylines for landing winning combinations of three to five or a kind. For pay symbols, 10-A card royals are used as the low pays, while five monster/character symbols make up the premium tiles. Hitting a five-of-a-kind winning line awards 1-1.5x the bet for five royals or 4-10x the bet for five premiums. Wrapping this section up is the wild symbol, appearing on all reels to substitute any regular pay symbol. If five wilds hit along a payline, they award 10 times the stake.

Undead Fortune: Slot Features

Undead Fortune builds off slots that preceded it while doing its own thing at the same time. Features to be found in the game are Walking duels, Expanded DuelReels, The Curse, The Tomb, and several bonus buys for eligible players.

Walking Duels
Landing Walk VS symbols activities Walking duels. Walking duels are wild symbols that expand to cover the whole reel. They reveal a monster and a multiplier value. If the monster is defeated, the multiplier is applied to the whole reel, boosting any wins that pass through it. Should more than one Walking duel be part of the same win, the multiplier values are added together before being used. Multipliers can have values of x2 to x200. Defeating the monster also awards a respin, and the expanded Walking duel symbol moves one reel to the left unless it is blocked by another Walking duel symbol or the edge of the grid. At the new position, another duel takes place, repeating the procedure mentioned above. New Walk VS symbols can land on respins.

Expanding DuelReels
Expand VS symbols appear on reels 2, 3, 4, or 5, triggering Expanding duels when they hit. Expanding duel symbols are wild and expand to cover the whole reel, displaying a monster and a multiplier. If the monster is defeated, the multiplier is saved, and the Expanding duel expands one reel to the left unless blocked by the edge of the board. Once expanded, another monster and multiplier appear, repeating the process. If the monster is defeated after the expansion, the new multiplier is added to the current value. Multiplier values are x2 to x200. If the monster is not defeated or the Expanding duel cannot expand any further, any winning lines connected to it are multiplied by the multiplier. Walk VS and Expand VS symbols are not able to appear at the same time.

The Curse
Getting 3 Curse symbols on reels 1, 3, and 5 on a single base game round triggers The Curse bonus game. For The Curse, 10 free spins are awarded with a greater chance of landing Walk VS and Expand VS symbols.

The Tomb
Landing 3 Tomb scatters in a game on reels 1, 3, and 5 in a single game round triggers The Tomb bonus round. This round begins with multiplier values above each reel. Some reels are locked, some are active. Landing Tomb VS symbols on an active reel reveals a monster and a multiplier value of 2x to 200x. Defeating the monster adds the multiplier to the value above it. Losing the duel locks the reel. When all five reels are locked, the feature ends, and the values above the reels are awarded. However, it is possible to unlock reels. When 4 unlock symbols land on a locked reel, it is unlocked, or when the Golden Unlock symbol lands, all locked reels are unlocked.

One more symbol which may land during the feature is the Epic Vs scatter. When hit, the whole grid becomes a duel, displaying monsters and a multiplier value. Win this duel, and all active reel values are either multiplied by x2 to x20 or have a value of 25x to 200x added to them. Losing this duel locks the reel the Epic VS symbol landed on.

Undead Fortune's feature buy menu provides these five ways of playing the game:

Bonus Featurespins – 3x the bet where each spin is 5 times more likely to award a bonus game. Very highly volatile.
Walking Duel Featurespins – 10x the bet to guarantee at least one Walk VS symbol lands. Very highly volatile.
Expanding Duel Featurespins – 50x the bet to guarantee that one Expand VS symbol hits. Extremely volatile.
The Curse – 100x the bet. Very high volatility.
The Tomb – 200x the bet. Very high volatility.

Undead Fortune: Slot Verdict
Hand of Anubis came blowing onto our screen like a dread chill wind from the underworld and immediately grabbed attention with its bleak visuals. Undead Fortune has some of that effect, but it's not so pronounced. In part because Hand of Anubis was first, therefore stole its thunder, and partly from the sprinklings of neon giving the game an undead at a 90s retro party vibe. It certainly contains a lot of horrific imagery, though (for an online slot); the chaps with the big, stretched mouths are practicality vile. Maybe play the game during the day or with all the house lights on when the sun goes down if you happen to get night terrors. There are a few things here that may well feed them.

On the gaming side, Undead Fortune is classic Hacksaw. It stands on the shoulders of slots the studio has released in the past while taking players' hands and leading them somewhere new. Walking Wilds might not be super new, but here, they get the chance to award multipliers when walking or, in the Expanding duel form, grow to cover parts of the grid while accumulating multipliers. Both are available in the base game or during The Curse, where they are technically more likely to trigger. Or, you can buy them from the feature buy, though getting repeatedly slapped down in consecutive losing duels can be irritating.

The Tomb is something else altogether and could be outrageously unpredictable. Bonus buy results ranged from something like 4x the bet up to 4,651x. Others weren't quite so extreme, yet Hacksaw Gaming slots have a reputation for volatility which The Tomb certainly displayed during the review. At full strength, Undead Fortune can reach payouts up to 10,000x the bet. With the studio's track record and stacks of potential multipliers in Undead Fortune, it certainly seems doable.

From an initial focus on online scratch cards, Hacksaw Gaming has become something of a darling amongst certain streamers, and it's not hard to envisage them (amongst others) destroying Undead Fortune's feature buy button, too. Fortunately, recreational gamblers should be able to extract entertainment from Undead Fortune as well, provided they're braced for a potentially rocky, volatile ride, and don't mind a horde of undead beings regularly trying to administer a beating.
