Das xBoot: Slot Overview

One of the best and most expensive films Germany has ever produced is Das Boot, which was released in 1981 and got raving reviews from critics. It was based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim's 1973 book of the same name, which detailed his exploits onboard the German submarine U-96 in the perilous waters of the Atlantic Ocean during World War 2. The sinking of Allied ships by U-boats during World War II probably isn't the first thing that comes to mind when developers think of fresh concepts. If Nolimit City has shown us anything, it's that they are not your average studio. They took Das Boot and turned it into Das xBoot, a sophisticated slot loaded with a variety of goodies.

The features and gameplay elements from earlier Nolimit slots have been combined to create Das xBoot. The action is set in a murky, grey sea next to the starboard side of the submarine, with graphics and effects straight out of Das Boot. Das xBoot paradoxically feels a touch tame after Mental because it is modeled on the Kriegsmarine. Although it has come-book-style aesthetics, it also has a fantastic Jaws meets Klaus Doldinger meets Blade Runner 2049 music that adds a layer of ominous threat to create a fun sense of tension.

The base game is played on a 6-reel panel set up in a 2-3-4-4-3-2 layout, which chops and varies based on the game phase or if specific symbols are present. It is playable from 20 cents to £/€100 per spin. In its most basic form, there are 576 ways to win, but given the appropriate circumstances, this number can increase to 75,712. Das xBoot, rated 10 out of 10, is a very volatile slot machine, which kind of goes without saying. Since RTP varies, keep an eye out for the 96.03% version because it is the most liberal. Wins happen 22.07% of the time, and free spins happen every 211 spins on average. There are two bonus round levels, depending on the number of scatter symbols needed to start the round.

Further exploring the symbols reveals ten of them as the standard pays along with a number of special symbols. The crew members who receive the lowest compensation are 10-A card ranks, followed by five premium crew members: chefs, radio operators, engineers, periscope operators, and captains. The Kapitanleutnant, which is worth 20 times the wager for a winning combination of six of a kind, is the most valued.

Das xBoot: Slot Features

It takes a lot of supplies to keep you going at sea for any length of time, but Das xBoot has a ton of bonuses like xNudge Wilds, xWays, xBomb Wild Multipliers, Silent Hunter Spins, and Wolf Pack Spins.

The xNudge Wild is a 4-row high wild symbol that always nudges to be completely visible. Let's start with the wilds. Each nudge adds one more to the wild multiplier. Except in the Silent Hunter Free Spins, where it only lands on reel 4, xNudge Wilds only appear on reels 3 or 4. Wins are assessed using the cumulative multiplier, which is the sum of all multipliers.

Only on reels 2 or 5 does the xWays symbol appear, revealing two to three instances of a typical random symbol. The same pay symbol is revealed on all of the reels if more than one xWays symbol appears there.

When an xBomb Wild symbol appears, the global win multiplier rises by one, and then it explodes, clearing the reels of all non-winning symbols. After detonating, xBombs become wild symbols. After the explosion, the symbols that are still in the grid fall to the bottom as new ones fall in. The win multiplier is transferred to free spins if they also initiate on the same spin.

Watch out for the scatter symbol, the sonar display, which may be found on reels 2 through 5. When three of them land, you'll get eight Silent Hunter free spins; when four of them do, you'll get eight Wolf Pack free spins.

Reel 3 becomes an 8-position periscope during the Silent Hunter Free Spins, and a new Periscope Wild could appear there. Torpedo launch sequence and +1 win multiplier occur if matching symbols land on reels 1 and 2, with a Periscope Wild on reel 3. The Periscope Wild covers reel 3 if the boat is sunk during this brief boat attack animation. Additionally, the multiplier for that reel rises by 1 for each location where the stack of Periscope Wilds nudges down to cover the reel. Any global win multiplier is increased by this amount. The Periscope Wild stays a solitary wild if the attack misses. Finally, any scatter that is visible adds +2 extra spins.

A torpedo tube appears beneath the reels 2–5 for the Wolf Pack Free Spins. On these reels, whenever a new torpedo wild symbol appears, it adds an xWays symbol to the torpedo area. These xWays symbols begin at x2, and reach a maximum of x9 by adding +1 for each subsequent torpedo wild that hits after that. The torpedo launches into the air to reveal the xWays symbols after all four of its places have been filled. These revealed xWays change into the appropriate number of normal symbols on reels 2 or 5, and into the appropriate number of wild symbols on reels 3 or 4. The win multiplier is also increased by +1 when a torpedo is launched. Scatter symbols again grant an additional +2 free spins.

The Nolimit Bonus feature buy option, which allows players to purchase either bonus game, is the final feature. While Wolf Pack Free Spins cost 350x the wager and had an RTP of 96.58%, Silent Hunter Free Spins cost 75x the bet and had an RTP of 96.57%.

Das xBoot: Slot Verdict

Das xBoot is more complex than usual, although it's not nearly as perplexing as the prior game Mental. Although it may take a few bonus rounds to fully understand what is happening, once everything clicks into place, there is no more uncertainty. It's funny how Das xBoot, which is based on one of the most dangerous battlegrounds of World War 2, feels very light in comparison to Mental. Although the comic book-style graphics somewhat soften the mood, sinking enemy ships and the ominous soundtrack do a superb job of raising the stakes.

A who's who lineup of Nolimit City legends is included in the features. It was an excellent idea to restrict special symbols to specific reels because it added variety and increased the impact of each other's effects if they were to trigger simultaneously. Typically, each round of Silent Hunter Free Spins will result in 1 or 2 Periscope Wilds, providing you the opportunity to cover reel 3 in wilds. The outcomes can be thrilling if an xWays sign or an xNudge are present at the same time. However, as Das xBoot is a volatile slot, be prepared for plenty of "Scheisse" moments as well (the game's term).

It only takes one incredible play to change everything, as we've seen in other Nolimit City games, and the Wolf Pack Free Spins are the feature where this is most likely to occur. Here is where you want to stack the torpedo with as many xWays symbols as you can. If you succeed in launching the torpedo, the subsequent spin might be utterly insane due to all the potential wilds, multipliers, and additional methods that could be in use. But be ready for some serious teasing. The torpedo, jacking ways, together with wild stacks, xWays, and the entire works once launched on the very final Wolf Pack spin during testing, but nothing connected on the first reel. This resulted in a cute but annoying "Nein, nein, nein" animation as the game attempted to express regret at the disappointing result.

The gameplay in Das xBoot is so all or nothing that it may be compared to a successful or unsuccessful submarine hunt. On a more somber note, some estimates place the survival rate for U-boat sailors at 20%. In contrast, there is much less chance of achieving Das xBoot's maximum win. But if you do, you'll receive a massive payout of 55,200 times your wager and the round will end with the Das Gold Des Roter Teufel feature activated.

Das xBoot may have less of an impact if you still have nightmares or recollections of Mental, but it is still a powerful, unstable juggernaut from Nolimit City. The team has chosen a topic that most people would avoid and paired it with gameplay that has no issues blowing starry-eyed players out to sea as much as rewarding them.
