Rocket Reels: Slot Overview
As billionaire trio Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Richard Branson take three very different approaches to outer space, Hacksaw Gaming quietly steps in with their version of off-world exploration. Rocket Reels is a space-themed addition to the popular Pocketz Series of slots. These mobile-focused creations look cute, pack solid winning potentials, yet are run by math models that rarely reflect their affable outer appearance. We get all of this in Rocket Reels, where we come across cluster pays, reactions, multiplier rockets, symbol beaming UFOs, and free spins.

If you're playing Rocket Reels on a mobile, you'll have to flip it to landscape mode to take in the full view - otherwise, the 7x7 sized grid takes up nearly the full screen. On landscape or a desktop, you get a vision of some purple planet with alien floating rocks and a starry night sky. It feels like a totally benign planet to explore, thanks largely to the cheerful music, which switches between trancey and kids cartoons. It's certainly not the sort of soundtrack that would play as baddy aliens stalk humans.

Rocket Reels may be played on any device you prefer, offering stakes of 20 p/c to £/€100 per spin. The theoretical return value varies from 96.3% when playing in regular mode, rising a teensy bit to 96.34% when buying the free spins bonus game. Loads of multipliers appear throughout the game, though this doesn't mean they always connect with clusters though. However, combined with the high volatility, when they do link together, it can be quite a thrill.

When at least five matching symbols land adjacent to each other vertically or horizontally, they form a winning cluster. In total, 10 regular pay symbols appear throughout; half are different coloured rocks, half are colourful planets or asteroid symbols. The most valuable clusters consist of 15+ matching symbols, and when made up of premium symbols, are worth 150 to 300 times the stake. Also included in the package are wild symbols which appear in any position, substituting all paying symbols.

Rocket Reels: Slot Features
Cascades, multipliers, and free spins sound pretty standard, but Rocket Reels manages to do something neat with them that is pretty unique and can lead to some excellent results. First of all, winning clusters are removed from the grid whenever they hit to make way for new symbols. These symbol drops continue to occur until no new winning clusters are created. Any multipliers on screen remain on the reels for the duration of a cascade sequence.

Appearing on any reel are 3 types of rocket symbols. In the base game, if 3 or more rockets are in view, they trigger a rocket launch when any cascades have finished. When activated, the rocket symbols blast off, exiting from the top of the grid. As they move, any symbols they pass over are destroyed and replaced with multiplier values. New symbols then fall into the gaps beneath these multipliers, and new win evaluations can be made. Any cluster with a multiplier overlaid on top is multiplied by the value. If more than one multiplier is used in a winning cluster, their values are added together before being applied. The 3 rockets possess these possible values:

  • Rocket 1 – multipliers of x1, x2, x3, x4, or x5.
  • Rocket 2 – multipliers of x10, x15, or x20.
  • Rocket 3 – multipliers of x25, x50, or x75.

From time to time, you might get lucky and see a UFO randomly appear when rockets have launched. When one appears, it floats over the grid, hoovering up between 20 and all of the symbols from the reels. New symbols then drop in. UFOs appear in the base or bonus game.

Landing 3 spaceman symbols awards 8 free spins. In free spins, rocket symbols always launch, even if there are less than 3 in view.

Lastly, if buying the bonus features is an option for you, the cost is 129x the bet. This initiates a spin where 3 spacemen symbols land to trigger free spins.

Rocket Reels: Slot Verdict
Of the three billionaires mentioned above, each has their own motivations for heading off-world. Jeff Bezos has visions of a trillion human beings trailing out across the stars living in colonies, Richard Branson seems more focused on the tourism dollar, and Elon Musk's company Neuralink can implant chips into human brains, so he seems to be going for the cyborg driven future angle.

Rocket Reels, on the other hand, isn't quite so ambitious. In some ways, Rocket Reels feels a little formulaic, but in a warmly familiar way rather than a negative one. You get the feeling Hacksaw Gaming's creative team has dreamed up dozens of these sorts of games and has them on standby, ready to evolve from concept to fully formed game at a moment's notice. These are the cluster paying, reaction-based slots that use multipliers in a variety of clever ways. We're talking about the likes of Xpander, Hop'n'Pop and Toshi Video Club, to name just three, which Rocket Reels sits comfortably alongside.

Like those games, the multipliers in Rocket Reels can really make or break your day. It's astonishing how many of them the rockets create yet end up going begging as nothing lands to make use of them. The good part is x10-x25's aren't as rare as you might think and occasionally link with a cluster, though there is a lot of teasing going on. However, the multipliers are such that one or two good spins can change everything, as we've seen in previous Hacksaw games, and Rocket Reels' rewards max out at 10,000 times the stake.

In summation, Rocket Reels is one more highly playable slot from the Hacksaw team that mixes, clusters, tumbles, and multipliers to good effect. It's no revolution but has everything needed to entertain players up for something simple yet potentially effective.
