Count Jokula: Slot Review
How many people have been living their lives and thought, 'Nah, I can't do it, this just isn't me', then got a haircut, maybe hit the gym, bought a new set of clothes, and started expressing the real them? A bunch of celebs seem to have reinvented themselves, and now perhaps, so have characters in online slots. In Count Jokula, an online slot from developer Play'n GO, we might well be witnessing one of these personal reinventions. A question which may have you scratching your head is, is this a vampire that wanted to be a joker or a joker that has transformed into a creature of the night? Let's see if we can work it out.

At the time of review, it wasn't explicitly stated anywhere that Count Jokula was part of Play'n GO's extensive Joker Series of slots, but it is fairly safe to assume it will be ushered into the fold. The Joker Series is a collection of online slots that vary in terms of mechanics, features, and themes, yet all have a joker styled character playing the central role. In Count Jokula, he appears in nosferatu mode, all glowing eyes and pointy teeth. Obviously, it's been done in a light-hearted way, as befits a simple 3x3 fun style game, and Count Jokula comes across a bit like Count Dracula from the Hotel Transylvania series of films. A vampire, sure, but a friendly one all the same.

Count Jokula is played on a 3-reel, 3-row game grid, with 5 ways to win, where only three-of-a-kind winning lines are possible. It's a medium volatile game; Play'n GO has rated this part 6 out of 10 and comes in a variety of RTP configurations, with a maximum value of 96.22%. Any device is suitable for paying Count Jokula on, and bet levels range from 5 p/c to £/€100 per spin.

Moving to the paytable where the symbols are an odd mix of undead-related items and fruit. For the low pays, we get cherries, lemons, grapes, and plums, while the high pays are chalices, daggers, and bats. Landing a winning line awards 0.4 to 1 times the stake, whereas a line of three higher value symbols pays 1.4 to 4 times the bet. Joker Wilds are worth the most at 50x the bet and can also substitute for all symbols.

Count Jokula: Slot Features
Count Jokula might present a complex web of personality, identity, and juxtaposing symbols, but its features, by contrast, are rather simple. Few in number, too, packing in a Shapeshifter feature and Respins of Evil.

Shapeshifter
On non-winning spins, if the Bat symbol lands on the reels, it shapeshifts into the Joker Wild if it will create a winning combination.

Respins of Evil
When wins occur with the Joker Wild symbol on the middle reel, a free respin is triggered. For the respin, the winning Joker Wild is sticky, and the multiplier trail displayed above the reels is unlocked. If another win occurs, another respin is triggered, and the multiplier is increased. Each win during the respins sequence is multiplied by the current active multiplier, which has a maximum value of x20. When reaching x20, the multiplier will stay at that level for any future wins in the sequence. Once the sequence ends, the multiplier is reset. Joker Wilds landing on the middle reel, forming part of a win, are sticky for the duration of the respins sequence, even if they are not used in any further wins. Should 25 consecutive respins occur, the respin sequence will automatically end.

Count Jokula: Slot Verdict
So yeah, there's not much going on in Count Jokula, which is no doubt the point. Within the confines of three reels and joker-related symbology, Play'n GO has found a way to express themselves through myriad variations of characterisation, features and setup. Count Jokula is one of the more humorous ones. It's not exactly laugh-out-loud material, but the mash-up of Dracula and Joker might elicit a smile, and it's a positive way of leading into the game.

It's not a joke with major longevity, and neither really is the rest of Count Jokula. There are enough extra bits to hold interest for a while, though for how long is a pertinent question. The Shapeshifter lurks around as a consolation prize, and the thought of chaining together a lengthy sequence of Respins of Evil might be motivation enough for some to keep bashing the spin button. Technically, respins can actually be quite fruitful, and for a seemingly simple three-reel game, Count Jokula comes with an eye-opening potential of 8,350x the bet. With what players have to work with, we're picturing a pretty spectacular run of respins to get anywhere close to hitting that level. But hey, on paper, at least, it's possible, with a probability of occurring of around <1 in 100 million.

Even if Count Jokula might not have the longest shelf life, joker enthusiasts shouldn't find it hard to be entertained while the game is in play. It's got pace, it's easy to follow, and the Dracula/Joker idea has a certain value. Getting on a respin roll has the potential to be quite a ride, and if you don't manage to catch one, not to worry, Play'n GO has plenty of other similarly related slots that might be a better fit.
