Dramatic music sets the scene for the game, with a crosshair grid that shifts and flows between expansions over the comic book graphics. Transitions and game events come with animated sequences of leading quality. Pearl Harbour is gripping and draws you into its theme.

The pay symbols start at the low end with 10, J, Q, K and A, awarding from 0.15x to 75x your bet for 5 – 40+ symbols in a cluster. Four character symbols follow, as a sailor, pilot, officer and kamikaze pilot, and matching 5 – 40+ symbols awards from 0.5x to 626x your stake. Character symbols can appear in 2×2 and 3×3 sizes as Colossal Symbols.

Three special feature symbols, Target, xBomb, and xSplit, act as wild, substituting for all others in cluster wins. Crosshairs represent the Target symbol, xBomb appears as a bomb symbol, and a samurai sword serves as the xSplit symbol. All special symbols affect the gameplay, as explained below under Slot Features. Lastly, the bonus scatter is represented by the Japanese flag that triggers the bonus for landing three or more during a spin.

Pearl Harbour Slot Features
The audiovisuals of Pearl Harbour are reminiscent of the moody cartoon flavour of Das xBoot, a beautifully crafted slot by Nolimit City styled around the famous book by Lothar-Günther Buchheim. Let’s take a closer look at the features of Pearl Harbour and see how the game compares.

Pearl Harbour comes with an enhanced bet feature named Banzai! For a 50% increase in stake size, enabling Banzai! Level 1 guarantees a scatter symbol in the middle of the active area on every spin, more than trebling your chances of triggering the Dogfight Bonus. Activate Banzai! Level 2 to double your stake and increase the likelihood of triggering the Tora! Tora! Tora! Bonus by more than ten times.

Pearl Harbour uses a cluster pays system that awards wins for matching five or more horizontally or vertically adjacent symbols. Working in combination with this method is a cascading symbol feature that explodes winning clusters from the grid, allowing new and remaining symbols to cascade and fill the gaps. This process can lead to new clusters being formed, in which case the cycle repeats until no more wins occur.

Each spin starts with a central 3×3 area of active positions, with the remaining positions of the 7×7 grid greyed out. During cascading win sequences, the following features can expand the play area, increasing the number of positions in play:

  • xBomb Wild Multiplier: Upon landing in an active grid position, the xBomb symbol will act as wild before it explodes, destroying a maximum of ten symbols and triggering a cascade. Scatters and wilds that are not part of a win will remain unaffected. If an xBomb lands on an active border position, it will expand the active area to its neighbouring reel or row accordingly. Should the xBomb symbol land in the corner position of the active area, it will make the adjacent reel and row active. xBomb symbol starts with an x1 multiplier, which can be increased by the xSplit feature. Exploding xBombs will increase the win multiplier by their total multiplier value.
  • Targets: Target symbols act as wild and, upon landing, expand the active play area to include its position.
  • Colossal Symbols: The four character symbols can land in Colossal Symbol versions of 2×2 or 3×3 in size. Colossal Symbols count as one symbol towards cluster wins and will always increase the active area to their position upon landing. Each Colossal Symbol can have an x2 or x3 multiplier attached. Colossal Symbols can be split into higher symbol counts by the xSplit feature.

The xSplit mechanic is a frequent feature of Nolimit City games that splits symbols into more examples. In Pearl Harbour, the xSplit symbol appears as a samurai sword, which, upon landing, divides all active symbols horizontally or vertically from its position, according to the direction of the sword’s handle. xSplit symbols can land in dual versions to split symbols horizontally and vertically from their position. More than one xSplit symbol will carry out its feature in turn, and should an xSplit symbol divide another, it will gain another sword before proceeding with its own turn.

Should an xSplit symbol with four swords become split, it will gain an x2 multiplier. All symbols split by a multiplying xSplit will also gain the corresponding multiplier as their own throughout the transformation. Lastly, a multiplying xSplit that divides another multiplying xSplit will multiply the value by its own, e.g. an x2 xSplit that divides another x2 xSplit will result in an x4 xSplit symbol. After carrying out their mechanic, xSplit symbols become wild with a multiplier according to the number of swords multiplied by any multiplier contained.

And if that’s not enough to follow, note that Scatter symbols, Targets and xBombs that are split will receive an x2 multiplier. Colossal symbols are first divided into 2 or 3 symbols within their 2×2 or 3×3 frame, according to the direction of the split. A second split would change a Colossal Symbol into 4 or 9 examples, and a third, into 8 or 18 versions within the 2×2 or 3×3 frame, respectively. The fourth split of a Colossal symbol adds an x2 multiplier to each symbol within or doubles any existing multiplier values.

On every spin, Target symbols activate first before any cluster wins and cascades. xSplit symbols will then trigger before any xBombs explode to complete the cycle. At the end of a spin sequence, the sum of all wins is paid, and the grid returns to the default 3×3 state.

Land three bonus scatter symbols during a spin sequence to trigger the Dogfight Bonus. Played inside a plane cockpit with 18 instrument dials, the Dogfight Bonus starts with a count of three spins. The aim of the bonus is to build a round win multiplier to be applied to your base bet. Each dial acts as its own mini-reel and spins individually to land a multiplier with a + or x attached or a blank dial. If a multiplier lands, the spin count is reset to three.

All +multiplier dials on a spin will be added together before multiplying the sum of all x-multiplier dials in view. The total amount is then added to the round win multiplier. Used dials will then become inactive until the end of the round. For example, a +2, +5, x7 and x2 dial appearing on a spin would result in a 133 (7×19) added to the round win multiplier value. Any x-multiplier dials will remain active until a +multiplier lands.

If the round ends with active x-multipliers, the values are added together before being added to the round win multiplier total. When the spin count reaches zero from three non-winning spins in a row, the bonus ends. The round win multiplier is then applied to your base bet value to calculate the bonus game payout.

Filling a column of inactive dials will trigger the Dogfight Attack. All multipliers will become active, and a dogfight animation ensues with a randomly determined hit or miss of the enemy plane. Hit the enemy to win the sum of all multipliers contained within the column calculated by the same + and x multiplier rules. Fill all 18 instrument dials to trigger the Kamikaze Attack, presenting a multiplier wheel containing hit and miss sections. Hit the enemy ship during the animation to multiply the round win multiplier by the multiplier gained on the wheel.

Land four scatters to trigger the Tora! Tora! Tora! Bonus. This bonus has the same setup and rules as the Dogfight Bonus but with two added features:

  • Midway Pop: Activated when a multiplier lands in the middle row of dials. The amount will transfer to the top row of the column and be added to an existing multiplier or randomly create a + or x multiplier.
  • Bomb Drop: When a full row of dials is filled, the Bomb Drop animation sequence is triggered, displaying a crosshair scanning enemy ships. A bomb is dropped, and a random hit or miss is determined. Score a hit to add the sum of + multipliers to multiply all x-multipliers for a total to be added to the round win multiplier.

Where available, you can purchase direct access to the Pearl Harbour bonus games using the Bonus Buy Feature. Pearl Harbour comes with three Bonus Buy options:

  • Dogfight Bonus | 60x Bet
  • Tora! Tora! Tora! Bonus | 712x bet
  • Lucky Draw | 1 in 50 chance of the Tora! Tora! Tora! Bonus | 73x Bet

Final Verdict
The action of Pearl Harbour is much simpler to follow than it sounds and can be a marvel of splitting symbols and explosive cascades with an expanding play area. The game is expertly crafted for an atmospheric and captivating experience, and one can’t help but marvel at the depth of production in the cockpit of the bonus games.

The delivery of the subject might not appeal to all and fortifies the studios’ edgy attitude. Pearl Harbour pushes the boundaries of online slot design in more ways than one and is filled to the brim with jaw-dropping animation in a graphic novel style. Fans of Das xBoot will enjoy the moody and atmospheric engagement.
