Hand of Anubis: Slot Overview

It's interesting, a lot of the time, the Ancient Egyptian god Anubis is presented in a benevolent fashion. In slots, for example, Anubis is often found in his jackal statue form. That can't have been edgy enough for developer Hacksaw Gaming which has chosen a completely different way of using the god in their online slot, Hand of Anubis. Lest we forget, Anubis was the deity who weighed the recently departed's heart against a feather, thereby determining what sort of eternity they would enjoy in the afterlife. That is some awesome power and responsibility right there since eternity is a really long time.

Players picking Hand of Anubis might wonder if the weight of their deeds have come up short because the jackal-headed god does not look overly pleased in this game. On one side of the grid stands a steely blue-eyed jackal-headed deity, while an equally steely red-eyed one stands on the other side. Hacksaw has used a very dark palette throughout the whole game, and whilst there's a pyramid in the background, Hand of Anubis is the very antithesis of what Egypt themed games usually look like. There's a Stakelogic's Gods of Death meets ELK's Cygnus, meets ripped jackal sort of thing going on. It's heavy, foreboding, and perhaps not for the faint-hearted Egypt fan.

The game's layout is also vaguely reminiscent of ELK too, as each spin sees 30 symbols tumble into a 5-column, 6-row panel, with the goal of landing clusters of at least 5 adjoining matching symbols. Volatility has been rated 5 out of 5, and in a Hacksaw slot, that's no joking matter. Check for RTP, as it comes in four settings, topping out at 96.24%, alongside a hit frequency of 36.92%. Bet levels can be found as low as 10 p/c before going as high as £/€100 per paid drop, while any device may be used to host the action.

To build clusters, players are equipped with ten standard tiles to do so. 10-A card ranks are provided on the lower side of the paytable, with five golden jewelled Egyptian style tokens as the highs. Starting payouts consisting of five low-value symbols are worth 0.1 times the stake; for wins containing 11 or more symbols, the payout increases to 15 times the stake. Up to 11+ sized premium clusters worth 20–60 times your stake can be found by landing five high payouts, which will earn you 0.3–1x your stake.

Hand of Anubis: Slot Feat

Soul Orbs, an Underworld bonus game, a Judgement bonus game, and feature buy options are all features in Hand of Anubis.

Spirit Orbs

A red Soul Orb, a blue Soul Orb, or both could randomly hit in the base game. Orbs are progressive multiplier wild symbols. Every symbol in a winning cluster boosts the red Soul Orb's multiplier by one, while every winning cluster boosts the blue Soul Orb's multiplier by one. Any win that the Orbs are a part of is multiplied, and if there are multiple Orbs involved in a win, they multiply each other.

The Underworld extra round, which takes place in a setting much more sinister-looking than the regular game, is activated by landing precisely three bonus symbols. The first item to take note of are the five digits below the grid, each of which is a multiplier beginning with zero. The quantity of winning symbols on each reel is added to the relevant multiplier beneath it whenever a winning cluster appears. Anubis Skull symbols can also appear; when they occur, the number underneath them is multiplied by x2, x3, x4, x5, or x10.

These lower multiplier values, however, are initially inactive and must have a green Soul Orb land above them on a corresponding reel in order to become active. Three additional spins are given each time a number is activated. The total of all active multipliers is applied to winning clusters, which is equally crucial, if not more so. Each multiplier has a maximum value of x9,999.

Judgement begins when four bonus symbols are landed. Regular symbols aren't used in this game; instead, only special or empty blocks can land. The first three spins in this hold and win round have multipliers above each reel (similar in fashion to Chaos Crew). The multiplier above them now rises when Multiplier Modifier Blocks land. Four categories exist:

The value directly over a skull is raised by +1–100.
All multipliers increase by +1–100 with epic skulls.
The value above them is multiplied by Anubis Skulls by x2-x10.
All values are multiplied by x2 to x10 by Epic Anubis Skulls.

A Multiplier Block fills the empty space left by an Ice Block when it falls, taking the multiplier above it as its value. Multiplier Blocks accumulate at the bottom of the grid after each spin, and empty blocks are eliminated. The following decline then happens. Additionally, when they land, Crusher Blocks may smash Multiplier Blocks underneath them, combining their values into a single block. The spin count was also reset to 3 by crushers. The bonus is over after three spins in a row without producing a Multiplier Block, Multiplier Modifier Block, or Crusher.

Buy Bonus
The feature purchase button let players to, when possible, buy their way into the Underworld bonus for 129x the wager (RTP 96.29%) or Judgement for 200x the bet (RTP 96.18%).

Hand of Anubis: Slot Verdict

The inventiveness of Hacksaw Gaming must be admired. The number of Egyptian-themed slots may equal the number of sand grains in a handful of desert, yet none compare to Hand of Anubis. There are no expanding symbols to be found, and the studio has removed all of the flashy, golden, physical slot trim that frequently accompanies these types of games. Even though it's a cluster-pays game, the idea is clear. Hacksaw once again demonstrates their mastery of creating moody, brooding games that are a pleasure to get lost in.

They are also experts in the kind of alarmingly impressive features seen in Hand of Anubis, and it's difficult to recall another game whose review we used the word "multiplier" so frequently. In Hand of Anubis, multipliers are employed frequently in all aspects of gameplay. Of course, there are many more in bonus rounds, and our first Underworld trigger was a great illustration of the kind of magic they are capable of when an x500+ multiplier is generated. Fortunately, a number of green Soul Orbs had their values activated, allowing them to be used to increase winnings. The agony of creating enormous multipliers just to have them locked till the feature ended can only be imagined.

Perhaps the initial positive outcome tainted our judgment, but Underworld did have a reputation for being more suspenseful than Judgement. Although both bonus rounds have precedents in earlier Hacksaw Gaming slots, the Hand of Anubis' extravagantly rich atmosphere and gameplay changes make it a highly distinctive and extremely enjoyable experience. If active multipliers in Underworld had been increased to their maximum of x9,999, Hand of Anubis might have challenged Tombstone RIP for the alpha position. There's little doubt that this game can easily reach its 10,000x win maximum as it stands.
